The BHS/CHS Class of 1963

50th Class Reunion

Raffle Items

This year we are trying to keep the cost per person down for our 50th reunion or using the money to help pay for the reunion for those that are less fortunate at this time.

1. Guitar
Jack Holcomb (CHS ‘63) makes guitars by hand and has donated one for the raffle.
$20 per raffle ticket

His guitars like this will sell for $3,600. He will also be putting a new pickup in the guitar and it comes with a hard shell case.

Jack's description:  The back and sides are rare Madagascar Rosewood that I purchased around 2001. It is still available at an outrageous price and it is mostly crap. The top is Englemann Spruce from Canada and the neck is Honduran Mahogany. Rosette is similar to a Ramirez guitar and tuners are Schaller made in Germany. The top purfling is (black-white around edges on front) made by Michael Gurian who taught my teacher over 40 years ago in New York. Binding (outside edges) is solid ebony and the Bridge is hand carved Brazilian Rosewood. This probably means squat to a non guitarist or someone that knows little about guitars. It is a nylon string classical guitar- Not a steel string acoustic. It was built in 2003 and the sound has aged nicely with a very strong bass with clear trebles. It has a Fishman Matrix pickup so it can be played plugged in.

That wire you see in the sound hole is for the pickup and it will not be seen. I need to fix that. Also, the fingerboard is solid black ebony as well as the arm rest you see on the right side of the guitar- the edge away from the drum. And the holes are ports which allow the player to hear what people in front of him or her hear. A more recent change by a lot of luthiers.

It is a beautiful guitar and Jack will be playing it for our memorial service at the dinner. You might enjoy having it for yourself, getting it for a grandchild to learn to play or simply have it as a beautiful display in your home as you see in the picture on a guitar stand.
