MAPLE SYRUP GINGERBREAD

1 level tablespoon ginger
1 level tablespoon cinnamon
1 level tablespoon Soda Bicarbonate
1 teacup buttermilk
2 teacups Maple Syrup
3 teacups flour
3/4 teacup butter
1 nutmeg
1 egg

Heat butter and syrup over fire.  Bring to boil and stir in Bicarbonate, ginger, cinnamon and grated nutmeg.  Take off stove and add buttermilk or sour milk and well beaten egg.  Beat in flour sifted 4 times after measuring.  Beat all together thoroughly, pour in shallow pan and bake in very moderate oven.  This is a delicious gingerbread if carefully made, textured and moist.
