PANAMA'S
CARIBBEAN TREASURE: THE SAN LORENZO PROTECTED AREA |
|
This book offers beautiful photographs and insight into the San Lorenzo Protected Area, formerly Fort Sherman, perched on the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. CZ Brats will remember it as a tropical forest treasure chest filled with iridescent blue morpho butterflies, bright green iguanas and rainbow colored toucans. It also has a rich history including Christopher Columbus, Caribbean buccaneers like Sir Francis Drake, California gold rush 49rs, Teddy Roosevelt and the builders of the Suez and Panama canals. The book is the collaborative effort of 30+ Smithsonian Institution scientists, USDA Forest Service professionals, historians, and Panamanian authorities that freely contributed their photographs and their expertise. Because of its rare and valuable resources, the land is now under pressure from loggers, poachers and development. Proceeds from the book will help protect the area.
