At the recent Panama Canal Society Reunion myself, Sandy (May) Robinson, Sue (McCullough) Burk and Cindy (Runnion) Gibson got together and decided we would work together to put things in motion!

Our class reunion will take place during the 2004 Panama Canal Society Reunion. The dates are July 28, 2004 through August 2, 2004. It will be in Orlando, Florida.

In order to reserve a room at the hotel (Caribe Royale) or order tickets to any of the Panama Canal Society functions (dances, lucheon, golf tournament) you need to be a member of the Panama Canal Society. The cost is $40.00 first year and $30.00 for subsequent years. You can join online by visiting the following website:

Comments I am enjoying very much this website as I stumbled on it pretty much by accident. I lived in Quarry Heights during the above years at ages 10,11&12. We lived in what seemed to be modern military quarters (concrete quadreplexes on concrete pillars) on the side of Ancon Hill overlooking the parade grounds which was a wonderfull source of entertainment for a pre-teen military brat. There was only one t.v. station & it was in Spanish which I didn't understand too well, though I was taking lessons. I have many fond memories of the school building with it's beautiful courtyard. Some of my teachers were Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Burdick & Mrs. De La Pina. I also recall catching 4-5 foot long iguanas & selling them to the Panamanians (they said the tail tasted like chicken). We would feed the coatimunda(sp) by throwing bread crumbs to the top of a stone retaining wall(about 8-9 ft. tall) behind our house where they would come down from the hilltop and congregate "looking for a hand out". We called them honey bears & they looked similar to the North American Racoon. I would very much appreciate someone with photos of the school(especially the courtyard) of that period to post them on the net so I can view them & thanks again for maintaining this web site.

Comments Hi!! My parents are Zonians. My father Norman was born and raised in Balboa - BHS '41. My Mother Doris (Gleim) was an RN with US Army stationed at Gorgas Hospital after WWII. They were married Aug 7, 1948. At that time, at least a dozen local boys married Gorgas Hospital Nurses and there were mutual Bachelor Parties etc. I had been researching their old Canal Zone friends for a project jointly celebrating their 55th Wedding Anniversary and my father's 80th Birthday later this month. I have gotten a ton of responses reminiscing about the "Good Ol' Days". I have lists of so many email addresses and websites that I didn't pick just this one. I was actually searching for verification of the spelling of Barnaby Street, near Balboa HS, where the Dugas family of 5 children grew up. One of my contacts believes that the street was actually spelled "Barnebey" after a CZ boy who died during WWI. I have not gotten any confirmation on this and I was searching for an old map. It is possible that the spelling was changed somewhere along the line. If anyone has any input on this or if you knew any of the Dugas's (Dot, Ralph, Norman, Joyce, LeRoy) or were a nurse at Gorgas... (or their offspring) Please contact me!!!

Comments I didn't even think to post here earlier this year but wanted to let people know that my husband Jim Thrift(BHS '71) passed away on April 9th, 2003. Our 2 sons, Eli, 9, and Noah, who will be 5 tomorrow, miss their daddy dearly. Jim loved the CZ and his friends and memories there and I was fortunate to meet some of his friends at the 2 reunions I attended w/ him...the last being 2001. Our computer room is a la Panama...Molas, local native art, Al Sprague, Panama hats, etc. I wish we could've visited the country with Jim as he had eventually planned.

Comments I was looking through the Panama Canal Museum web page the other night when I came across and ultimately bought a license plate which read: Zonian - endangered species. Sadly,it made me realize how true that is. I was born in the old Margarita hospital in 1947 and was in the nursery the same time as Carla Chambers. I think we were the last few born there as Coco Solo hospital was opened shortly thereafter. I lived in Margarita til age 16 at which time my father retired from the CZ and we had to move to the states and like so many, settled in Fl. Even though I didn't graduate from CHS I still consider myself a part of the class of 65! About five years ago I took my family on a Pan Canal cruise to show them my roots.As we sailed past the breakwall, it was like I had never left...all the familiar sights brought back so many nostalgic memories. Sadly, we Zonians are an endangered species who will one day be extinct!Still, I'm proud to say, after all these years, I still am a CZ Brat!
