Teddy Roosevelt's
church---by reputation. The Canal Zone was Theodore Roosevelt's great Progressive
Republican social experiment, one in which he tried to eliminate or minimize many of the
divisions found in the US society of his time. He created a Canal Zone without elected
political institutions, and encouraged an ecumenical movement in the religious sphere. The
Union Church, a multidenominational Protestant movement, took hold in Canal Zone
communities. The Balboa Union Church, the biggest and best-endowed of the several Union
Churches, now has an international congregation.
