Contrary to most of my army collegues I explored extensively throughout the country from San Blas to Darien to David and Boquete. I've never been back but it would be interesting to see what remains of the US presence and revisit some of my favorite places, especially Boquete.

Comments: Someone please inform him about our Government in the CZ! Our democracy, our elected individuals, our community, our unconcerned Ex prez., about all of the lost generations, about the riots that were a reaction from an action, taken so quickly by pen and paper. How anyone that had lived in the CZ, became stronger and suffered a loss when forced to leave. The difference and similarity between Zonians and Panamanians. The love hate relationship, that violently showed on the border every so often. Constant reminders; people physically hurt, mentally hurt, why harmony could never be, and at the same time, the Zonians admired the Panamanian lifestyle powerful enough to fight for our little corner of the Zone. And yet...were denied the chance. Wondering if my grandfathers house still has the tree in the front yard with my Dad's name carved in it. Wondering, wondering, wondering, it's all we can do now...our history was taken from us, and now the buildings lay abandoned. Many generations of many Zonians were uprooted. The Panamainians fought for their country, yet isn't that what we were doing aswell? I hope this gives some insight...To Panama and it's people, we still love you, and plan to come back often to visit. We will buy lots of souveniers, and bribe the pharmacist weekly too... nothing has changed, just don't expect us to totally disappear, we'll always be part Panamainian in our hearts, and in our birthright too. Viva Panama! Viva la Zona! Viva todo!

Comments: Here's a research question. Forgive my ignorance, but I had almost no interest in politics when I lived in the Zone. Was there anything like a community council that provided input to the governing bodies from the residents of the various communities? Here in America we have city councils of elected representatives of the communities to look after the interest of the residents. Was there a similar body in the Zone? If so, how were the representatives selected? I don't recall any elections. How did they relate to the Canal Zone Government? Did they have any authority over the decisions of the Canal Zone Government? I recall the various unions having providing input to the Canal Zone Government regarding housing issues, traffic controls, etc. To those of you who know, I am interested in knowing how the residents of the Zone fit into the democratic process.

I was raised a tad further south -- Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Went to an American school, so I can relate to your school and friends ("brats"). It's sad to think about what's going to happen to the school. I believe in the old bumper sticker, "Keep the Panama Canal, Give Jimmy Carter Away." This is a nice site and I hope it's kept up for the "brats" for many years to come.

Comments: Just returned from Mar.4 to Mar.20 trip to Panama and former Canal Zone. My sister Inez in Curundu (BHS '59)has e-mail at: inez.clark@mailcity.com....my brother Franz "Shorty" in Snellville, GA (BHS '63) has e-mail at: atl.bergs@mindspring.com....my sister Janice in Thousand Oaks, CA (BHS '65)has e-mail at: SWANEE17@aol.com....The traffic lights in Panama City turn from solid green to blinking green, to solid yellow for an instant, and then to solid red. Try not to go through a light on a yellow. Stop when you get the blinking green and you'll be safe....The city and highway police patrol (TRANSITO) is usually out in force to catch speeders. In the Interior, some have radar guns....The Thatcher Ferry Bridge on Sunday afternoons sometimes has traffic backed up on the west side for several MILES from people returning from the Interior and heading to Panama City. We heard that sometimes one of the west-bound lanes will be temporarily converted to east-bound traffic so as to have 3 lanes on the bridge used for Panama City-bound traffic....The Inter-American Highway to David is in generally good condition. Much of the highway from Arraijan to Santiago is now your standard 4-laned separated highway. There is lots of new highway construction and stops/delays can be frequent....We never saw nor heard of nor read of any anti-American conduct by any Panamanians during our trip. Nearly everyone was friendly....We did not need our International Driver's License for auto rental, but it is a very good idea to pick one up at any AAA Insurance agency just in case. You will probably need it if you are stopped by the TRANSITO. And they will also ask for your passport, of course....Visit the X-S Sportsbar at Santa Clara Beach. It is owned and operated by Americans from Chicago and well worth the stop....We bought diesel for $1.01/gal. on Fourth Of July Avenue and paid not much more in David; gasoline cost approx.$1.30 to $1.50/gal in most places....Full canal transits are offered one Saturday each month for $135.00/person and half transits cost $75.00/person. Tickets can be bought at the Argo Tours main office on Balboa Avenue opposite the YMCA....the Balboa YMCA gymnasium has been converted to a retail souvenir shop with a wide choice of mmerchandise for tourists. It is worth a visit....The Panama News weekly newspaper is written in English and very informative. It is free and can be found in many places....The Balboa-Diablo clubhouse empanadaa are, in my opinion, no longer made. The Diablo clubhouse-cafeteria employees didn't quite know what we were talking about. The empanadas we tried in Capira and elsewhere had awfully flaky crusts, not enough meat-pork filling, the spicing was wrong, and they were full of air!....Balboa Beer is not sold universally throughout the Interior. My taste does not go to Panama Beer, Atlas Beer, Cristal Beer, nor to Soberana Beer, so I bought and carried my own cold bottled Balboas....Balboa High School is completely fenced in. On a Saturday morning, an understanding Panamanian security guard opened the flagpole side gate for us so we could take photographs and walk around the campus....I am not so sure that Panama City and the former Canal Zone on December 31, 1999, will be recommended places to be, as the celebrations may get pretty wild. I think Americans, former Zonians, should consider laying low until the drinking, the speeches, the parades, and the fireworks are all over and things get back to normal.

Comments: Greetings everybody. God Bless all here. Questions:(1) Are there any Alumni of BHS Class of 1957 out there? (2) Did you serve on the Senior Gift Committee? (3) Do you remember our gift to BHS? It has been over 42 years and counting.... But just for the record, I remember that our class broke with tradition of No, not another concrete bench and gave the BHS Plaque. Do you recall? Some say it was the Class of 1961, but that is bogus! Please somebody check their Zonian 1957 Yearbook. The front of the book was handsome dark maroon in color and offset by the BHS Plaque. I would check mine but I lost it in one of my many moves. Again, thanks. Just want to keep the record straight. If I'm wrong I'll do 50 wind sprints....(heh, heh) Remember all those we did during the football season....but we won't go there. > Just one final note. As BHS closes its doors for the final time, I extend best wishes to all graduates of the Class of 1999 and all Alumni wherever you all may be.....

Comments: The receipes are great. I haven't tried any of them yet as I just got to the web site today. I am definitely going to try some. The names alone bring back memories of many years ago like the Diablo Clubhouse Empanadas. I worked at the theater for a while & always managed to get Mr Zapata (the manager of the clubhouse) to let me have some of those empanadas after the movies were let out.

Comments: I lived at Albrook AFB. Went to Diablo Annex Elementary and Curundu JHS '64-'67. What ever happened to Mr. Wolf. You know, the social studies teacher who liked to through kids out of windows? I read through the class of '71 Balboa HS website. How did Charlie Keenan die? I saw Pat Weed's name! Gosh, I haven't thought of her in a long time. And, where's Edwin Murdock? And Billy Cashman. And Bobby Wiseman. And, June Cook. I remember a lot more. There's just no one else around here who remembers. Do you remember the smell of empanadas at the Balboa cafeteria? I do.
