Comments: Happy to know that there is a website out there on the canal Zone. I graduated Balboa class of 79. Also graduated Panama Canal College class of 81. Seeing this site brought back alot of memories that I thought were buried and lost for good. Hard to find people that have lived this experience.

Comments: OFFICIAL EDICT From this time forward, there shall be no more morbid comments about the demise of the Balboa Yacht Club. Henceforth, all stories shall be related to the good times enjoyed therein. There shall be no further comments regarding conspiracies or dark motives on the part of Panama or Panamanians. Even if true, which I doubt, such comments are non-productive. As a part of this edict, all who have visited the former shrine known at the Balboa Yacht Club shall set aside one day each year to remember its last day by consuming a bottle of Cerveza Panama and then sprinkling the last few drops over a small pile of ashes. This edict pronounced by the right reverend Emperor of Causemania, RowBowWow the first. (You may now be seated.)

It's nice to see all the Panama and Zone pix and info, but sad too as I realize the changes that are happening. Thanks for all the good work! P.S. Where is the CZ Schools museum going to be? I left the Zone at the end of my junior year. CZ living was a unique experience -- a wonderful, carefree place to grow up! I am thoroughly enjoying browsing through these great sites. Comments: Les, Skeeter, Perhaps a new story category is in order: "Balboa Yacht Club Stories" As us old folks know, there are a million stories in the naked city. (In case some of you think that I am being obscene, "Naked City" was an old Cine Noir TV cop show back in the 50's which was considered "new" viewing on SCN in the 70's) There must be twice a million stories in Balboa Yacht Club. I, for one have a few, most of which are true or at least rooted in truth.

My brother, Anthony, originally told me about the CZ Brats' www site, and I've finally made some time to see what it's all about. I've never been to the Panama Canal Zone but plan to do so in the near future. With that in mind, as well as some research towards a biography currently being constructed by my uncle, Thomas R. Goethals, I'm trying to learn more about the place and it's history, and I'm glad a resource like this one exists on the web. Hello to all you children of the Canal Zone.

Comments: The news of Balboa Yacht Clubs final demise has left me saddened and in a way glad. Thank God it went out in a blaze of glory rather than rotting away as it has been for so long. Lots of memories there. It was my temple, my mosque, my inner sanctum, my holy of holies. (Actually, that's B.S. It's where I drank a lot of beer and tried to score with chicks.) But, all the same, aint no place like it and never will be. Close the books. The final chapter is written. Roll up the scrolls, place them in the earthenware jars and hide them in a cave in the desert. A short prayer may be in order. The prayer that comes to mind was first uttered by Sister Janis Joplin: "Oh! Lord! wont you buy me a Mercedes Benz......" Maybe the words of the reporter at the time of the Hindenberg crash are more appropriate: "Oh! The humanity!!" Had enough? OK. I'll go away for now. But I will be back. Rowdy

The Interior was the highlight of the trip. I love hot springs and Panama is full of them. I relived alot of old memories and made new ones. Taboga and Rio Mar have not changed much with time. It seems our kinship of being Zonians is a bond that grows stronger with time. As we used to say back in the BHS class of '66, "Cool!"

I have saved the picture of Fort Clayton and the Miraflores locks, because I had passed over the locks so many times coming and going to Panama City. The only disappointment I had was that I could not find a picture of Howard AFB. I want to thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put up your web site. Comments: Very happy to have found this wealth of information and the possibility of findng old friends and classmates and communicating with them. I arrived at the CZ back in 51 coming from Costa Rica, graduated from CHS in ´57 and went to Universidad de Panamá until ´63 when I got my degree in Architecture. Went back in ´83 as a contractor with USAID until the whole office got kicked out from Panama in ´87. Since 1993 I have been living in my home country, Costa Rica. Will love to hear from you guys.

Comments: My family arrived in the CZ in 1939 and left to go stateside in 48 when I was 14. All my boyhood was spent in the Zone except for a short period during WW11. What a wonderfull place to grow up. We lived on both sides of the isthmus. I remember night fishing on the oil?dock and snook fishing the Chagres. I'ts been a long time (51yrs.) but I can still remember a few names of long lost friends. Richard and Everett Dillman, John Albritton and Frank Sogandares of Empire St. Leona Hart and Louis Tremblay from the (flats?) and Gene Salter from Cristobal. From what I recall you never went without friends as a zoneite. Mooving stateside was the great dissapointment of my youth.

Comments: This is great!!! What a neat website. My brother and I have made plans to go to the final BHS graduation in May. Should be fun. TRUE Zonians didn't say,"The other side". That was for transients. Real Zonies said, "We is goin' nex side." And, of course, we always stopped at El Arranque to get things going.

It was such a care free time...it wasn't till years later back in the States that a realized what a unique and wonderful experience I had.

Comments: I would love to hear from anybody who was from the BHS classes of 1968 to 1972 and particularly anyone who lived in Curundu from '67 to '70. My cousin Rick Wilder and I were hanging out at the clubhouse at the time with Pablo (Quail) Prieto, Alfred 'Walt'Creque, the Duncans (Tom and his sister Martha) Rick Velasquez, Bo Smail, Bob Smalling... and so many others. Alice Parthenais, I can't believe we lost touch. And I've been looking for Sue Mendenhall for years. Anyone who knows the fates and/or whereabouts of these and any others who were part of the Curundu Crew of the era, please be in touch. Remember that fateful night when life as we knew ceased to be... The night the clubhouse went up in a spectacular blaze of fire and smoke and took with it so many rich memories? Oh, how we mourned.
