Comments: CZBrats is a wonderful project and who ever is running the show, certainly puts alot of time and work into the Site. I wish to thank you for such a pleasant visit to the place of my youth. I lived in the CanalZone from 1940 to November 1957. My sister Myra Field Helmer and brother Sam Field were born Panama and most of the time we lived in Cocoli on the West Bank. We all have agreed that the years we spent growing-up in the CanalZone were the greatest. Again thank you for such a great way to visit the "ole sod". Best Wishes, Ann Field Kirrane

Comments: I lived in the CZ when I was a little kid. I believe it was in the early 60's. Now my 11 year old son is doing a year-long research project on Panama. That's how I found this site. It's great! He has already gotten some good info. off this site. Also, this summer I will take several high schoolers on a mission trip to the San Blas Islands. I never thought in a million years I'd get to go back to Panama. I'm VERY excited about going. I'm sure I'll be a regular visitor to this site. Thanks for putting it together!

Comments: Greetings everybody! God bless all who read these tracks. > John Schmidt of Cocoli are you out there? Ann Fields wrote a little piece about our hometown. She mention your name among many others who were part of those hey days of Cocoli....where the living is easy. You still reading Zane Grey Western's? You got me started on them when I lived in Cocoli. I still do from time to time read one. The last one I read was "Rider's of the Purple Sage." > I got to go through Zaneville, OH some years back.....now that I think about it it was quite awhile ago, but the reason I bring it up is there in Zaneville is a museum dedicated to this fine writer of western stories. And somewhere I read he went to Panama on one of his trips. He said it was great! So, Panama even back then at the turn of the century had a lot going for it. And I feel strongly it will always be that way....Thank God! Just thought I would share this. > And Jack Jenkins.....you ever recover that flying model of that Navy Corsair you built? Last time I saw you fly it off your back porch in Cocoli, it was headed at tree top level into the jungle. > Well, Sayonara, Adieu, y hasta la vista! I'll BE-BACK. God Bless, The Cocoli Kid

I wonder if anyone knows (or has access to) the words & music for these children's songs of Panama: El Marido y la Piedra (The husband and the stone) found in Charles Haywood's Folk Songs of the World published by Day in 1966. Hojita de Guarumal (Little Leaf of Guarumal) Mi Pollera (My hoopskirt) found in Anne Rockwell's El Toro Pinto and Other Songs in Spanish, published by Macmillan in 1971. I have these book on interlibrary loan, but they may not arrive in time for the Girl Scout Thinking Day activity. If anyone has the words and music to them & would be willing to send them to me, I'd be happy to reimburse for postage & copying. Thanks. -Jean

Are there no old timers around that remember Colon in its glory days of the Copa Cabana, Monte Carlo, Bill Grey's Garden and Chang's Bar? The Club Hoise was a great place to get away from the army food. How about the time the Mauretania pulled into Pier # 6 with over 2,000 Aussies on board, headed for the Pacific. The troop commander made the mistake in letting them go into Colon and it took 3 days to round them up. Oh yes and the Washington Hotel pool. We were there every afternoon. Greatest duty in the entire army. If any body remembers, e-mail me

Don't think I'll ever head back, though.. heard my old house is now a foundation and rubble after Just Cause. Loved those years though..the Slide.. all those excellent nights tossing back Panama's or Olympias sitting on Contractor's Hill late at night, watching the ships..and when we really got lucky, the subs..go through the canal. Damn near get misty-eyed just recalling it. Anybody else remember that?

Comments: I made a lot of good friends in Panama when my father was stationed there from 1969-1972. We lived in Navy housing at Coco Solo. I can't remember the name of the road, but it was the one by the front gate, with the huge field between it and the Galeta/Coco Solo Admin Building. My parents have a lot of slides of us puddle surfing/skim boarding out back. They also have pictures of my 6th grade class that some of the CHS Class of 78 might be in. I remember Paula Davison, Bob Carwithen, Mike Cirulli, Stuart Smith and Clayton Walker. I had Mrs. Hall for the 6th grade. I know for sure that I have a picture of Bob Carwithen as he was on the same little league baseball team with my brother and I. Our team was the "Police Pals" and were the worst team in the league! I remember being scared to death to step up to plate when Mario Peno(sp?) was pitching! Those were still fun days at the field in Margarita. I can still smell the popcorn and fresh roasted peanuts from the little cart of a man whose name I can't recall. I was only 9-12 years old then. Some of the items on your "You Know you're a CZ Brat" page brought memories and smiles. We lived on the Atlantic side so can't relate to most of it though. Well, I don't want to write a book so I'll end here. Great web site! Thanks!

Living in Panama has been a good life. Working for PCC has been stressful these past few years. Knowing that the end was near and all of the changes being put into place for the transition.

Comments: Bravo for the new look! Rumor Control: While stationed in Howard (85-94), I heared by military and civilians that the Bridge was weakened by the continuous after-shocks caused by the bombings to PDF'S installations at Balboa, Chorrillo and Amador; True or Not?Also, any stories about the newstatand at Balboa Train Sta? I knew it closes early 90's.Additionally, any details what caused the two famous tragic accidents in 1971 and 1979 at the Bridge?

Comments: I just happened on this site and plan to revisit it during future days. Would love to hear from anyone I knew--or didn't know-- in the Zone. I was born in Panama City, while my family lived in Gamboa. Moved to Balboa (Tavernilla Street) in 1945 and later to Diablo and back to Amador Road in Balboa. Lived in Los Rios while I was at Balboa High School (Class of 1957). My Dad was a Canal pilot, retired in 1961, the year I graduated from Dartmouth. Since then I've been in the Army for a few years, including service in Germany and at the Pentagon. Later lived for 5 years near Richmond, VA. I have taught school since leaving the Army. I lived in Greenville, SC, from 1975 until 1997. I still own my house in Greenville, but am teaching at Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, PA, during the school year. I was really pleased to find this site. It's a great idea. Thanks to whoever created it.

Comments: Hi! Hope all CHSers are well and contented. Class of CHS'58 had a great reunion last summer; Class of '58 will gather again in 2003 for our 45th reunion during the larger PC reunion. Any CHS class on either side of '58 interested in having a "cluster reunion" so there are more of us to see and reconnect with in 2003? All best to all of you in 1999. -Steffi Beck May

Comments: Just an update from my previous message. My family and I lived in Curundu from '60-66. We lived next door to the Smiths, Kunz's, and later on the Becks. Marco Beck was my best buddy. In '66, we moved to Cocoli and lived there to '72. Some of our neighbors were the Gearharts, Mikez's, the Gilberts, the Maxi Family. I hung out with Jackie Cooper, Keith Brown, Terri and Steve Maxi and Bobbie Gearhart. I went by Mary Donaldson back then. My brothers are Dan, Pat, Mike, Jimbo, and John. My sisters are Judy and Nancy. If anyone remembers the Donaldson Family, please e-mail me. I attended Cocoli Elementary School from 3rd grade to 5th grade and St. Mary's only for the 4th grade. I would love to hear from someone. Thanks.

Comments: I lived in the CZ from 1950 to 1957. I attended Margarita Elementary School and the 7th grade at Cristobal Junior/Senior High School. I played little league baseball on the Coco Solito Cubs baseball team. Have great memories from my time in the Isthmus.. My front yard at one time was the Miraflores Locks from our Ft. Clayton home. A fence separated our yard from the highway that went from the Pacific side to the Atlantic side. Back then there was a two section bridge that spanned the Miraflores locks. I've enjoyed browsing your web page.

Comments: Came to Panama in 1974 for a two week vacation, at the invitation of Tom Welch, my former shipmate in the merchant marine. Signed up for 2 years and stayed for 20. Lived in Los Rios, worked tugboat shifts in Gatun. Must be some kind of commuting record - living within 5 miles of Pacific Ocean, working within five miles of Atlantic. Had to give it up. When the railroad went to Panama, I could never count on getting there on time, even getting there at all. Remember one night - scheduled to work midnight, I was in an open passenger car near the end of the train, when all of a sudden we came to a gradual stop. After several minutes, thye conductor called the engineer on the radio and found out that he was still going but that our car had become diengaged. Long wait till engine came back and picked us up. Remember carrying green bananas away from a ship at pier 18 that had lost its refrigeration. Remember putrting the old 299 on the railroad tracks and spiriting her away to cristobal before Panama could find out. It was a WONDERFUL LIFE!

At the time of the picture that showed the school, gym, back of commissary, and theater end of clubhouse, you can see just about all of "downstreet" Margarita. Everyone sure spent alot of time at that picture site. Happy New Year! Thanks for the memories.

Comments: I first met someone from Panama 2 years ago, Carlos Royo, in Galveston, and since then, met and befriended several others that have become good friends: Ian Dillon, Lucas Robertson, Carlos Capunay, and esp. Elliott Carlson. Through them I've heard countless stories, and will finally be visiting Balboa this summer with them. This is a great site, where I learned a lot..(like what a blue goose is). Anyways, I'm interested in any correspondence, especially with a girl, as I've only met those guys. Happy Holidays! Jen.
