My name is Audun Opland and I live in Norway attending my last year of High School. As a part of my classes in Regional Geography, I am now doing a major project on The Panama Canal, with special emphasis on the Panama Canal Zone. I spent a year in Panama as an exchange student, living in the pueblo of Ocú, Herrera; this also being the reason why I chose Panama as the theme for my project.

3) How would you say the Canal Zone has changed since 12.31.99? A Panamanian friend of mine once told me it had become “ugly and untidy.” How do you consider such a statement? What ever became of the plans of turning the Zone into “a new Hong Kong”?

4) How where, in your opinion, the Panamanian attitudes towards the Canal Zone, while the Zone existed?

5) How do you consider US attitudes towards what some has called “the surrender of the Canal?”

Comments Can anyone confirm if the small pine tree in the former Balboa Police Station parking lot was planted by President Roosevelt on his visit to Panama? They are half way complete on the construction of a large fountain where the police station was. I believe they may flatten the parking lot and this historical tree may need to be saved. If the happen to cut it down before any intervention is done, I will collect the wood and make historical cains out of its limbs........
