Comments: Hi Brats!!! I always enjoy checking out your website. It is special to me because I was born in the Canal Zone. My parents brought me to the states when I was very young and I haven't had a chance to go back, although I have an opportunity to visit in November and I am REALLY looking forward to it. I can't help wondering what would have happened if we would have stayed in Panama........would have been a very different life! Keep up the GOOD work! Hope at least some of you will be able to stay to keep the tradition alive. Everything will work out for the best. Clayton

Comments: It was traumatic tearing up my roots from Gamboa and life in Panama. I miss the friends we left there, but it is so good to be able to see the boys and their families. If anyone passes this way, please give us a call at 830-896-038l and we will give you directions to our new home and our acres of scrub cedar. Haven't tried to get anything to grow in this rocky soil, but I am making progress. I joined a garden club to get some hints as to what will and will not grow in this area. Jackie

Comments: My grandfather, Edison Wirtz was one of Teddy Roosevelts Rough Riders and went to the Canal Zone when Roosevelt did. My grandfather helped dig Calibra Cut. My mother, Elizabeth Wirtz was born in Gorgas Hospital in 1909 and my father, Ernest Stahler went to the Canal Zone when he was 17 years old and worked in the Building Division. I was born in Gorgas Hospital in 1941 and lived on Empire Street until we moved to Gavlin area. I was a neighbor to Joseph Lyle Fuller who was born in Santa Tomas Hospital in 1934. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1952 and we got married in 1963. We have seven children and 14 grandchildren. We live in Orlando, Florida. It would be nice to hear from anyone that knew us or my parents. My father was a great fisherman and caught a world record black marlin in the early 1940's.

Comments: Hello, I was born in the Cana Zone and went to school in Cristobal untill my parents moved us to the Alabama when I was 16. Panama was the happiest and best years of my life except for my children. Iam the little sister of Gene Shumate. I often view the canal zone site to read all the wonderful messages you guys post. I have tried to click on the names to email you guys but the email adresses blow the browser away. I also develop web pages for the Navy. I work for SPAWAR Systems Charleston Detachment Pensacola Florida. I am the special emphasis subcommitte chairperson and will be hosting the Hispanic Heritage Brunch this month and was wondering if any of you had any infomation I could talk about. I tried to email the guy on Christmas Stories and could not email him. any one who like can email me at linda.doege@ncts.navy.mil

Comments: It's nice to know that my family and others helped build the canal, with that in mind they're the true zonians. Let's try not to forget that. Panama is the only place in the world where one can actually feel free. I miss mango salad, sugar cane, and BOYO. I went back down for the last graduation. It's really sad when some things have to come to an end, but the memories live on forever. PANAMA RULES!

Comments: Have really enjoyed surfing through a bunch of fond memories---you guys(czbrats) have done a fantastic job of putting this together. I do have an item that I want to donate to the Pan Canal Museum--it is a surveyors level which the French used while they were trying to survey and build the canal.I once saw the theodolite that is a partner to the level in the museum in Panama at the old air terminal that was located on Albrook.I am an old Gamboa resident--my Dad worked for the Dredging Division--I graduated from Balboa Higk School in 1948---some of my most fond memories are From my days in Panama--All three of our children were born in the Canal Zone at Gorgas Hosp. And I still have a daughter in Panama ,married to Dean Homa (Kim) so we do visit usually once a year--so---we have seen the many changes that have taken place. I am just so glad that I was fortunate enough to live there during the good days--we came to Panama in 1939- I later went to work for the Inter American Geodetic Survey (IAGS)whom I worked for from 1948 until 1967--when I came to Houston to work for NASA--we did the Lunar Mapping and the mapping for the Lunar landings--when that was over I went back to IAGS in 1978 and worked at the IAGS Cartographic School at Fort Clayton until I retired in 1989---so I have seen the good and the bad that have taken place---I am really thankful for the works that you all are doing --we were certainly lucky to have been a small part of something so great as THE PANAMA CANAL

I'm trying to find Leo Vitola and Lori Parada, or anyone else who remembers the Grymala family from Jadwin Ave. My sister Sue & I went back to Panama in June. We loved it! Twenty-six years is too long to be away. Went scuba diving in Bocas del Torro and Contadora. Can't wait to go back. Gamboa sure looks differnt. Bye for now!

Comments: I think it's great that there is a place where we can find out what is going on in Panama today, I lived there from 1960-1965 in Panama City, and then in the Canal Zone until 1976, I hated to leave, but I had no choice. I still remember my trips to Volcan, and all the beaches on the Pacific coast. I traveled to Boca del Toros, and to the Darien. I still love mi patria.

Finally in August 1999 returned to Panama for a visit with my husband, our three children, and my in-laws. Panama was not the same Panama I remembered from my growing up years. I hold many special memories. I lived in Diablo and attended Diablo Elem for First and Second Grade. For Third through Sixth grade I attended Saint Mary's in Balboa. While growing up in Panama my weekends where spent at Gorgona Beach. My family and I plan to visit Panama again in the near future.

I lived overseas 15 years before having to return to the US for college. Our time in Panama was a very special time. All the sporting activities and girl scouts and just the kindness and warmth of the people there are memories I hold dear.
